Although it was more than thirty years ago, I can still remember vividly how I felt when I found out we were having a little boy. Everything seemed uncertain and I was more than a little afraid. Although I had my family and friends around me, I felt a strange loneliness I had never felt before.
Mary must have felt an overwhelming sense of loneliness amidst the storm of emotions that surrounded her. For who could understand what it felt like to carry the Son of God? Mary left her home to stay with her cousin Elizabeth who was also carrying a child—John the Baptist. I think the Lord brought Mary and Elizabeth together to comfort one another, for each was carrying a child upon who so much depended.
I wanted to capture Mary’s face at that moment when she held Elizabeth and felt for the first time a refuge from the storm.
