Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. Matthew 27:45

It is assumed that Christ was suffered on the cross for six hours. His crucifiction began at the Third Hour of the day, 9:00 am if sunrise at 6:00 am is when the counting of hours begins. At the Sixth Hour, or Noon, the region was cast into darkness for nearly three hours. The event was not an eclipse of the sun, as it was said the the sun itself darkened. Christ is said to have passed at the Ninth Hour, or 3:00 pm, timing that coincides with the end of darkness.
