This scene—described by director Dallas Jenkins as “the single most important moment in the whole show”—is the heart behind Liz Lemon Swindle’s painting You Are Mine.

A Sacred Collaboration

When Dallas Jenkins and his team set out to translate the story of Christ into The Chosen, they knew that art would play a vital role in helping viewers carry those sacred moments into their homes. Dallas personally selected Liz Lemon Swindle for this task, drawn to her ability to capture Christ’s love with honesty and tenderness.

Liz was given freedom to choose which scenes spoke to her most deeply. Out of several pieces she created, You Are Mine was ultimately chosen. As Dallas reflected during the painting’s reveal:

“This moment here, without even a close second, is the single most important moment in the whole show. The whole Gospel is encapsulated in this moment.”

The Artist’s Perspective

For Liz, the choice was clear. “I hear time and time again people saying the same thing as me: ‘That’s me. I’m Mary.’

Though her own struggles may not have mirrored Mary Magdalene’s exactly, Liz related to the feeling of distraction, of letting life’s noise push Christ aside. You Are Mine became personal—a reminder that the Savior continues to reach out again and again, calling us back, whispering: “That’s not for you… You are Mine.”

The Details Behind the Brushstrokes

Every stroke of You Are Mine was intentional. Liz carefully studied light, shadow, and composition so that the viewer’s eye would be drawn immediately to the embrace between Mary and Jesus. She adjusted the placement of torches, reshaped rocks, and balanced highlights so that nothing would distract from the heart of the piece: Mary leaning into the safe arms of her Savior.

She even added subtle touches that might go unnoticed at first glance—like the gasp of recognition in both Mary’s expression and in Christ’s, a small but powerful detail symbolizing the instant of surrender and belonging.
