Yongsung Kim spent his youth in the beautiful countryside of Korea, which is rich with the emotion that he hope's is captured in his paintings and art. Yongsung started painting in middle school and spent much of his time growing up drawing.
After Yongsung Kim became an adult, he began to worry about the path his life would lead, so he prayed. Through the inspiration he gained while painting, he decided he would live a life devoted to bringing glory to God. Even though he didn’t formally study art or painting, he felt he had been blessed with natural talent and aesthetic taste and he began a life as a Christian artist.
With much love and affection for his family, Yongsung Kim strives to live as an example of a devoted Christian father. His family includes his wife, a daughter who aspires to be an animator, and a son who hopes to be a guitarist.
The main theme and focus of his paintings, images, art, and pictures are primarily Jesus Christ and Christianity. Co-artists have asked Yongsung if it was necessary to intentionally include Christ in every piece. They have even suggested he remove Christ and paint a likeness or euphemism of Him. In a world with an increasing culture of violence and darkness, in addition to decreasing bright and clean depictions of religion, Yongsung Kim wants to shed the light of Jesus Christ on this new generation. So he deals with subjects of Christ as the Good Shepherd, Christ with His flock of sheep, Christ’s love and grace, and showing the love of Christ as major themes.
Yongsung Kim also loves painting Jesus Christ walking on water. He has done this in paintings like The Hand Of God, Walking On Water, His Mighty Hand, and With All Thy Heart. Christ reaching in the water to save Peter from drowning is one of the most impactful events in all of scripture. Jesus Christ walking on water and then reaching in the water to save his disciple is a perfect example of Christ's love for each of us.
Rather than the world’s standard of a heavy and grim depiction of Jesus Christ, Yongsung Kim seeks to work with that which is easy to understand, that which resonates with the sympathies and emotions we feel. Rather than complex or difficult art of Christianity, he focuses on a bright, righteous, and beautiful idea of Christ, utilizing portrayals of familiar scenes of nature to help it enter the heart of the observer.
