“O death, where is thy cursed sting? O grave, where is thy victory? No longer wilt thou torment man, Thou wilt only be a memory! Thy chains are broken, man is free! Thy shadowed grasp is now diminished! Because of One, the Son of Man, The war is won; forever Finished!” Most images of the resurrection of Christ that I’ve seen are outside shots of Him walking out of the tomb. For this resurrection piece, however, I wanted to portray an angle from the inside looking out. In this piece, Jesus looks back with a smile, acknowledging it is finished. Death has been defeated, chains have been broken, and bonds have been unbound! Never again would the Son of Man be overshadowed or kept in the dark! His step out into the light was His ultimate triumph! In this image, an observer will see light penetrating the tomb, suggesting Christ breaking through the confines of death - both physical (the lower penetration) and spiritual (the higher penetration). A ray of light leads up to His face and through it to a horizontal plane of light above. This symbolizes that when we die, we will be resurrected and will, at some point, see His face. Those who are found worthy by having taken upon them His name, having His countenance engraved upon theirs, will ascend to live with God again. Through this, we learn that it is only THROUGH Christ that we can achieve eternal life and exaltation. The horizontal plane above is symbolic of the peace and calm that awaits those that love God and His Beloved Son. I love the small detail mentioned in the scriptures — that the cloth around His head was folded up, almost as if it were a “calling card,” as it were — an interesting glimpse into His character and nature. There was no haste, no theft, no struggle; there was order, composure, and intention. It was a deliberate calm departure, not an escape. Christ had authority over death! I have a testimony that because of Jesus Christ, death no longer has sway over the destiny of man! Through Him, we can all ascend to the light where darkness cannot touch! I’m an artist from Utah and a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I have fallen in love with art since the 4th grade, but have only started actively pursuing it professionally near the end of 2024. My name is Alan Deaton, however my artistic “pen name” is Paul Marli. This stems from a business name my wife and I created years ago which utilizes both of our middle names. Although the name pays homage to us both, I am the artist of these pieces.
I’ve mostly worked digitally but strive to keep it close to working in a traditional way (avoiding digital effects and exclusively digital tools). I have plans to work on physical, traditional mediums as well.
I believe art has the capacity to motivate, uplift, and inspire. A piece may not change the world around us, but I believe it can change someone’s world; all it takes is the right piece! Rather than simply trying to manufacture a “pretty picture”, my aim is for my art to be instructive. It is my hope that someone who spends time with my pieces gains a deeper understanding about a characteristic or attribute of Jesus Christ; that they understand a little more about His true nature.
I have a testimony and sure knowledge of God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. My art is one of my ways I hope to spread and share my testimony with others. I do my best to draw on my own personal experiences when composing a piece and creating the “right” title. Sometimes I’ll spend hours trying to get it just right, but I will not move forward until I feel it is right.
Each piece I make contains a part of my own testimony and experience with the Savior. It is my hope that my pieces can give you, at least a little, your own precious experiences with Him.
