Girls and their horses share a special bond. My horses knew everything there was to know about my private life. My blood bay mare, in fact, carried me through my teenage years.
Dixie got new shoes for her first—and last—horse show. We were awarded a huge ribbon almost as tall as me for the show, and when I wasn’t looking, Dixie ate it! Guess she figured it was hers anyway.
From the responsibilities of owning Dixie, I learned about being a caretaker and a good friend. I further learned there were all sorts of relationships, both good and bad. True friends will carry you, and you will carry them. But beware, some friends may take you for a ride—literally!
