Story Behind the Art

26 X 38.5 Oil
“Used to seem that the men at a dance were all six footers. Such a man now towers against such a crowd. Did men grow bigger because they were the first generation on new soil or was it the largest and strongest stock who came West First.”
Dick was Mart’s brother, therefore Minerva’s first cousin as well. The cowboys often hosted dances for the single women, and families, in the area (but mostly to attract the single women). The cowboys provided the entertainment.
“The Snake River bottoms was a favorite wintering place because of the feeding ground to be found, the shelter afforded by the surrounding hills, and the water supplied by the River. For similar reasons the Indians used the present site of Pocatello for their winter quarters. Just west of Pocatello, along the banks of the Snake River, lay a rich and fertile grazing ground, where was situated the headquarters of the old War Bonnet Cattle company, a big outfit that operated in this country for several years. Dick and another cowboy, Bodie Watson were members. The cowboys would often host dances “
These paintings are excellent portraits of known and documented cowboys and pioneers.
